I Prefer Invisalign® Over Metal Braces. Am I Eligible?
We get it: Braces aren’t fashionable, and they aren’t always very comfortable. If you’re looking for an alternative, you’re in the right place. Here, we show you which boxes you need to check to be eligible for Invisalign®.

Overcrowding, overbite, underbite — whatever your problem is, you should never ignore an orthodontic issue. Without prompt treatment, even a minor misalignment can turn into a serious oral health issue that requires invasive procedures to correct.

Fortunately, orthodontic treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. You can often choose between traditional metal braces and clear alignments like Invisalign® to correct your smile.

Our team at Mamkin Dentistry Aesthetic & Restorative Center in Ridgewood, New York, prioritizes your wants, needs, and preferences as much as possible when helping you decide which orthodontics path to take. Whenever possible, we connect our patients with options like Invisalign that offer increased comfort and, in many cases, faster treatment.

But clear aligners aren’t for everyone. Here’s a closer look at what goes into Invisalign and who we consider the ideal candidate.

How Invisalign works

Before we help you determine if you’re eligible for Invisalign, it’s best to understand how the aligners work.

Invisalign is a cutting-edge orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear trays to gently move your teeth into optimal position. We use advanced digital technology to take detailed images of your mouth, which allows us to customize your trays to ensure a perfect fit and ultimate comfort.

You wear your trays for at least 22 hours a day, taking them out to eat and brush and floss your teeth. Every couple of weeks, we give you a new set of trays that continue to shift your teeth. On average, Invisalign treatment lasts from 10-18 months.

Why our patients love Invisalign

There’s a time and place for traditional metal braces, but not everyone needs such dramatic intervention.

Those who qualify for Invisalign often enjoy shorter treatments, more comfort, and even improved oral health.

Because Invisalign aligners are clear and removable, you can smile with confidence, eat and drink whatever you’d like, and keep your teeth and gums clean during your entire treatment period.

Most people might not even know you’re having your teeth worked on while you wear your aligners.

The ideal candidate

There are many cases where traditional braces and Invisalign overlap, but we take great care during the consultation and evaluation phases to make sure we recommend the best course of treatment.

Invisalign is typically an option for older teens and adults whose jaws are fully developed and who have:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Mild overbites or underbites
  • Protruding teeth
  • Crooked teeth

Invisalign also requires a bit more care and diligence on your end, so we want to make sure you’re up to the task. If you can’t remember to wear your aligners or you tend to misplace or break items, traditional braces that aren’t removable might be a better option for you.

You’re not a candidate if you have a major issue that requires moving your jawbone, such as severe overbite or underbite.

What if I already have metal braces?

If you already have metal braces, you’re not out of luck. We can discuss removing your braces and starting you on Invisalign if your teeth have responded well to metal braces.
